Virtual IOP for Teens Across California
Get your teen the help they deserve, anywhere in California. Our Virtual Teen IOP brings structured, clinically proven mental health and substance use treatment to teens ages 12 to 17, delivered securely from home through licensed, statewide care.
When Weekly Therapy Isn't Enough, but Residential Feels Like Too Much
Watching your teen struggle is one of the hardest things a parent can go through. You may have already tried a weekly therapist, only to feel like things still aren’t improving. At the same time, the idea of sending your child away to a residential facility can feel overwhelming, frightening, or simply wrong for your family.
Our Virtual Teen IOP in California is designed for exactly this middle ground. It offers a higher level of structure and support than weekly sessions, while allowing your teen to stay home, stay in school, and stay connected to the people and routines that matter to them.
What Is a Virtual Teen IOP?
A Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program is a structured treatment program delivered through secure, live video sessions. Teens typically attend several days per week, for a few hours each day, working with licensed clinicians and a small group of peers facing similar challenges.
Within our levels of care, virtual IOP sits between a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and standard weekly outpatient therapy.
Every session is live and led by our clinicians, not recorded videos or an app. Your teen connects face to face with their care team and group, building real therapeutic relationships from wherever they are in California.
Signs Your Teen May Benefit From Virtual IOP
You know your child better than anyone. If something feels off, it usually is. Your teen may benefit from a structured virtual program if you’ve noticed:
- Persistent anxiety, depression, or unpredictable mood swings
- Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities they once loved
- Declining grades, school refusal, or trouble functioning day to day
- Experimentation with drugs or alcohol, or ongoing substance use
- Intense emotional reactions, irritability, or behavioral outbursts
- Difficulty coping with stress, trauma, or a major life change
- Isolation, low motivation, or signs of emotional shutdown
These signs often mean your teen needs more support than a weekly session can provide. With the right care, things can get better.
Comparing Levels of Care
Understanding the differences helps you choose the right path for your child:
- Virtual IOP vs. weekly therapy: One hour a week often misses the root of escalating behaviors. IOP provides the immersion teens need for real breakthroughs.
- Virtual IOP vs. residential treatment: Residential care removes a teen from their life. Virtual IOP lets them stay in school and connected to their support system while receiving professional help.
How Our Virtual Teen IOP Works Across California
We’ve made it possible for any family in the state to access specialized adolescent care, no matter where you live.
- Secure and private: Sessions take place on a platform built to protect your teen’s confidentiality and meet HIPAA privacy standards.
- Built around school and family life: Programming is scheduled so your teen can keep up with school, activities, and home routines.
- Live, licensed clinicians: Your teen works directly with experienced adolescent therapists in real time.
- Small, supportive groups: Teens connect with peers who understand what they’re going through, in a safe and facilitated setting.
- Family included: Parents and caregivers are part of the process through regular family sessions and guidance.
All your teen needs is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera.
What's Included in the Program
Our virtual program is comprehensive and tailored to each teen’s needs. Care commonly includes:
- Individual therapy for personalized, private support
- Group therapy to build connection and communication skills
- Family therapy to strengthen relationships and continue healing at home
- Skills training for emotional regulation and healthier coping
- Psychiatric and medication support, coordinated when appropriate for your teen
Because no two teens are alike, we build an individualized plan around each adolescent and adjust it as they grow and progress.
Conditions We Treat
Dual Diagnosis for Teens
Many teens experience both a mental health condition and substance use at the same time. This is known as a dual diagnosis, when both conditions occur together.
Treating only one side rarely leads to lasting change. Our Virtual IOP is designed to address both at once, so the emotional pain often driving substance use is treated alongside the behavior itself. This integrated approach supports more complete and durable recovery.
VERIFY YOUR INSURANCE
In Network With All Major Insurance
We believe that high-quality care should be accessible. Compassion For Teens accepts most major insurance plans. Our team will work directly with your provider to verify coverage and minimize your out-of-pocket costs, so you can focus on your child’s recovery.

Is Virtual Treatment as Effective as Care at Our Facility?
It’s a fair question, and a common one. For many teens, virtual IOP delivers the same structured, clinical care as treatment at our facility, and a growing body of research supports the effectiveness of telehealth for adolescent mental health.
For some families, virtual care is even more effective, because it removes the barriers that kept their teen from getting consistent help in the first place: long drives, transportation gaps, scheduling conflicts, or the anxiety of walking into a facility.
What matters most is the right fit. During your assessment, our clinical team will help you decide whether virtual care, care at our Laguna Hills location, or a combination is best for your teen.
Our Therapeutic Approaches
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Our Virtual IOP in California utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to ensure every teen feels seen and heard.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): To reframe negative thought patterns.
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): To teach emotional regulation and distress tolerance.
- Individual & Group Therapy: To build social skills and peer support.
- Family Therapy: Because healing happens best when the whole family is involved.
- Holistic Therapies: Incorporating mindfulness and creative outlets like art therapy for whole-person healing.

Compassion made recovery possible for me—without stepping into a facility. Their virtual care was personal, flexible, and truly supportive. They saw me as a whole person, not just a patient. Can’t thank them enough.Posted on Maza HoldingsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Have a bit more to say about this IOP but in summary really grateful for Josh, Dr JP and their team of doctors and group facilitators for helping me through a difficult situation. I needed to work around my schdule with family and kids and their program was perfect for me. Maybe it's not ideal for everyone but for me it was exactly what I needed. The whole process from intake, insurance verification, admission, scheduling, I was kept up to date on everything. I met with the Doctor and he was very knowledgeable, spent an hour with me which was what I needed, someone and a program to show that they care. Would recommend this IOP to anyone who struggles with mental health and needs some support and doesn't want to drastically change their life commitments at the time. Thank you Josh and thank you Compassion IOP.Posted on Tara EdwardsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
